GAP YEAR PROGRAM 2009
The Gap Year Program offers a ‘try before you buy’ experience of military training and lifestyle for young men and women, without any obligation to serve beyond the 12-month program. Once fully established, the program will offer up to 1000 paid positions each year, with 500 in the Army and 250 each in the Navy and Air Force.
The program offers worthwhile training and employment within various ADF career streams that are the same as those undertaken by fulltime members of the ADF.
Participants will receive a substantial salary during the program and benefits from standard ADF employment entitlements such as free medical and dental care, subsidised accommodation and meals and employment allowances.
Participants also have the option of voluntarily transferring to full-time or part time ADF careers and training. Those who complete their ADF Gap Year and go on to complete a recognised tertiary or vocational qualification at a civilian institution may also receive a $10,000 bonus upon successfully re-joining the full-time ADF within five years of completing the Gap Year.
ELIGIBILITY
School leavers who have completed Year 12 (or equivalent) in the past two years and are in the age range 17 to 24 inclusive on their date of enlistment may join the Gap Year program.
Students currently undertaking Year 12 may also apply now for entry on completion of their studies.
Applicants must meet normal ADF entry standards, including education, aptitude,
character, citizenship, health and physical fitness.
Gap Year participants enlist in the ADF for up to 12 months, with parental consent for those under 18. There is no obligation to serve beyond that initial period of enlistment.
SALARY
Participants who complete the program may expect to earn between $30,000 and $46,000 over the 12-month Gap Year period. The actual salary and salary-related allowances payable will vary according to the Gap Year employment stream allocated, length of training and Service.
